The man behind 1SmartPuppy
They say that behind every successful puppy there is a man with a scoop. Ladies and gentleman, I am that man. (Ba-dum-bum)
Okay, here’s the real scoop.
Early love of storytelling
My ability to write engaging stories was first recognized by my father, who would call upon me to write commercials and promotional copy for his radio station. As a kid in my mid-teens, it was lots of fun and a fine use of my fertile imagination.
College days in Washington, DC were spent mainly in area theaters, where I did everything from stagehand work to designing sets and lights to acting and directing.
Once it became clear to me that schoolwork was no match for the theater, I left school to begin my theatrical career in earnest, working on productions of new plays and musicals in Washington, New York, and Baltimore.
With marriage and fatherhood came the realization that I needed a more steady and dependable source of income. Marketing and advertising called, and I answered.
Challenges and triumphs
Since 1989, I’ve worked with organizations of all shapes and sizes to tell their stories and help them achieve their marketing goals. My career path has presented me with my share of challenges and triumphs:
- Small business marketing/advertising consultant
- In-house direct marketing copywriter
- eCommerce manager
- Communications director for B2B startup
- Senior analyst for user experience consultancy
- Marketing strategist & brand positioning consultant
- Inbound marketer and HubSpot certified partner
- Freelance copywriter, website writer, and content marketing strategist
Flexibility and experience
As a freelance copywriter and small business website consultant, I consider it an advantage that I started out before the emergence of the web. I enjoy a flexibility and range of experience that many copywriters simply don’t have, one that comes in especially handy when working with clients who rely on me to lead their transition to content marketing.
I know where they’ve been, and I know how to get them where they want to go. That makes me a better website writer.
LEED Green Associate
With sustainability in the built environment playing an ever-increasing role in the ways we live, work, and play, I became a LEED Green Associate to better understand how architects, engineers, developers, builders, and contractors need to communicate with customers and prospects.
